FFO : Radiohead, Deftones, Nirvana

New kids on the block Jetski Babylon are churning out grunge hits like there’s no tomorrow. At a time when the charts are flooded with indie-pop and grime, their punchy, yet melodic rock is exactly what we need to freshen up the scene.

Think of them as a huge mash up of riffage, smooth licks and heavy drums complemented with vivacious vocals. A combination of alternative rock and grunge, they have ticked many boxes of creating a sound that hasn’t been achieved by many but still feels very much at home to the genre.

Many of their influences stem from the 90s rock they listened to when growing up, with their mutual love for Radiohead shining through, there’s a sprinkling of these nuances present in the compilation of dulcet tracks.

‘'Reverie' covers many aspects of life like missing your hometown nights out, being played for a fool by a loved one and taking a light-hearted stab at the way the country treats its people in the darkest of times.’ - George Gallivan (Bassist).

JB take their listeners on a journey with ‘Reverie’. The four track EP sets off to a mellow start on ‘Better Days’ and quickly picks up the pace to reach some heavy hitting beats with the anthemic ‘I Like It When…’ and ear-shattering ‘Holdin’ Up The Wall’, before finally reversing itself back to the more sombre tones of ‘Tuesday Nights’.

An emotional rollercoaster of audio, the quintets varying sound and genre will take the listener on a ride that may hit close to home to anyone trying to find their way in a world of uncertainty.

The punchy ‘I Like It When…’ has been dubbed “a banger” by BBC Radio Solent’s Steph Newenhouse, who has high hopes for the young band. And she has every right to. The 5-piece have filled this dance worthy tune full of tangy guitar riffs and blasting drums to complement Olly’s dynamic vocals, a track that sure goes down a treat at their live shows.

In contrast to the booming beats, the boys can turn it around and achieve a much more mellow sound. From the dreamy guitar harmonies, it might seem like a cheerful song from the get-go, however there is a much deeper meaning behind the melodic “Tuesday Nights”.

I paint myself blue, to show how I feel inside, outside it’s summer time but for me it’s only winter” Olly belts out in the second verse. The lyrics stemming from the depression he tackled as a teenager, a period the singer describes as being ‘a very low time’.

“I don’t like talking about my own self but obviously with music it can open up many things..” – Olly Tilt

Throughout JB’s discography Olly gets a chance to be candid about his past struggles. The singer admits to exploring new music as his coping mechanism, stating: “I’m addicted to music, it’s like a drug to me.

Newer tracks ‘Hollow’ and ‘Nine’ take a slightly different approach from ‘Reverie’, with plenty of guitar distortion and soothing harmonies. The eclectic mix of sounds stays true to the Jetski brand yet achieves a different tone to their past releases.

Rumour has it they are heading back to the recording studios soon and if Reverie and Hollow // Nine are anything to go by, we are in for a harmoniously heavy treat!
